Bus Service Between London And Kolkata

If I told you to travel to the end of the world by road, would you do it? Not as a challenge but as a means of transportation, would you still do it? The reason I am pondering over this question so much is because of the recently surfaced trending news item that claims of this actually taking place in 1968. If you woke up today to open your Instagram then you definitely saw a picture with a bus named Albert that claims to have been a part of a Bus Service Between London And Kolkata.

This bus that existed in the 60s had claimed to have made 15 trips between India and London. But the astonishment hits us is when we think of the distance that this bus covered. It was a time when roads weren’t as developed as they are today.

Bus Service Between London And Kolkata is an astonishing discovery that has intrigued many of us, making us think about the possibilities of road travel back then.

So, before we start a debate, let’s first sit down for a round of discussion of the events that unravelled during that time.

Possibilities of Albert’s existence

So, 1968 was a time when India was not under British Imperialism. All that went on in the country was independent and not dictated by the Queen and the British officers.

Now, listen carefully as we say that back then Kolkata was also known as Calcutta in the 60s. It still carried shadows of its British past.

Now, it is pretty clear that the British were pretty advanced in terms of mechanics as seen by their establishment of the eastern railway in India. So, coming with an on-road expedition service from Kolkata to London wasn’t that much of a shocker. To run a Bus Service Between London And Kolkata doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility.

Also, it is said that the bus was boarded by a large number of Indians back in the day. So, is it possible for this shuttle service to have actually existed?

Road to Sydney

According to the TimesOfIndia article, it specifies that the bus service also operated between Sydney and London.

Here is where the questions start arising, because if you have seen the world map then you know that Sydney is in no way connected with India or Britain. There are major water bodies that separate the two continents of Europe and Britain.

Now, there is a possibility of ferry services, but such a route even existing seems too farfetched of an Idea. Unless of course, the bus itself was ferried on a large enough ocean vehicle for that part of the journey which was not land-based, along with the occupants.

Why is this service possible?

There was some speculation in my team that there might have been another Calcutta back in the day, that existed in Great Britain. It may be that the Bus Service Between London And Calcutta was between that Calcutta (of Britain) and London. Although the theory makes much more sense, there is no solid evidence to back it.

In the end, if we must conclude this discussion then it is safe to say that the existence of such a service would be an epic discovery but the theory of that happening seems highly unlikely. But we are still inclined to give our verdict in its favor, given loads of pics we found in support. We have put them up here as well. Boy, what a ride that must have been!

What do you think? Was there really a bus service between London and Kolkata? Or was it a service to London from another very different region that had a name similar to Calcutta (or Kolkata as we know it now)?
